Hi, my name’s Michael Jackson and I live in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Among my interests are monitoring aircraft on HF radio and dabbling in VHF reception, ACARS and ADS-B, essentially any aircraft communications.
This has been a hobby for me since I was about 14 years old when my cousins who lived near Manchester’s Ringway airport showed me a radio that could listen into what the pilots were saying to ATC and vice versa, and that was it! I was hooked.
Since then I’ve had a myriad of receivers both HF and VHF/UHF. My current receiver is a Kenwood R-5000. Recent ownership has seen the following receivers recycled; RFSpace Cloud-IQ SDR, Icom IC-R75, Elad FDM-S2, Afedri SDR-Net, Icom IC-R71, Elad FDM-S1, Funcube Dongle Pro+ and AOR AR3000. The only other receiver I have is a Chinese made RTL Dongle with the R820T chipset for ADS-B, VHF reception, Inmarsat Aero collection and VDL2 decoding.
My HF antenna is a purpose designed and built 13MHz dipole and 1:1 balun and VHF is a Diamond D130J discone.
I have recently given up hosting an ADS-B site and sharing the data with various websites as the interference on HF was just bugging me!
“My journey down the SDR path is beset on all sides by the inequities of broadcast signals and tyranny of neighbours. Blessed is he who in the name of all DX-er’s discovered the physics of filters for he is truly my saviour. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to interfere with my signal reception. And you will know my name is the great aero DX’er when I plug my filters in.”
